You will need to budget for time and money.

First, I will ask you to draw up a list of about 20 simple bullet points to your story. These will give us a framework and hopefully a chronology. You don’t need a lot of detail.

Expect to spend three months videoconferencing with me twice a week for around two hours a time. Then I will write for about four months but checking in with you regularly when I need to go over again certain parts of the story.

After that, we review the manuscript together and I will guide you towards the process of submission to an agent or publication (self or traditional) and bring my media background to assisting you with publicity at launch. I have a good track record, and even better PR guy who knows who to call and where to place your story.

Your book should come in between 65,000 and 90,000 words. The latter is equivalent to about 320 pages.

I do not work for nothing. Normally, you will pay me a monthly retainer at the start of every month for twelve months. Very occasionally, I can be persuaded to reduce that fee, but you will have to show me the Netflix contract first!

It is important to remember that the work is the work. Royalties and movie rights are the icing on the cake which nobody can predict.

Whatever you tell me is in strictest confidence unless it is already in the public domain or destined for the book. I will always be happy to sign an NDA. Trust is king on both sides. Most people find the process very therapeutic and liberating. Then there comes the pride when they see their name on their own book cover.

Finally, please remember this. If I was no good at this, I would have no clients and be available tomorrow! I have always had work since I wrote Tango 190.
